Three Hood River Valley High School seniors brought home top places from the Robert D. Clark Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament at the University of Oregon on February 15-16. Competing in Dramatic Interpretation, Maggie Bertrand won 1st Place and Audrey Schlemmer took 2nd. Theo McCormick won 2nd Place in Radio Commentary.
The team entered 20 students in 42 events at the annual competition. Freshman Arden Reid was awarded 3rd Place Speaker in Junior Parliamentary Debate. Nine students qualified to final rounds of competition. Fourth Place winners were the Duo Interpretation team of Jacob Kaplan and Bertrand and freshman Theo Levine, Junior Poetry. Finishing in 5th place were senior Nazareth Chavarria in Prose Reading, sophomore Jazmin Contreras in Program Oral Interpretation, freshmen Melanie Glatter, Junior Poetry and Sadie Smith, Informative. Smith was acknowledged as the top Novice Speaker in her event and was a finalist in Junior Prose. Senior Jordan Killingsworth placed 6th in Junior Poetry and made the final round in Junior Radio Commentary.
