The Eagle Swim Teams wrapped up their incredibly successful 2019-2020 high school swim season with a very strong showing at the State meet at Tualatin Hills this weekend. (editor note: the website is not loading new photos, so state photos will be uploaded when website allows)
Competing for the Eagles at State included: Sarah Arpag, Chloe Bullock, Celilo Brun, Madaket Greenleaf, Abby McCormack, Faith Ocheskey, Emma Titus, and Lillie Tomlinson for the girls – and on the boys side Gavin Hackett, David Hecksel, Clayton Lee, Connor McElwee, and Luke Southall.
Friday brought 70% personal best times and lots of qualifying swims for Saturday. The day began with the girls 200 medley relay of Sarah, Celilo, Madaket and Faith swimming a season best by over a second for 8th place with a 2:00.14. Madaket swam the 200 free, and unfortunately was called for a false start, but her time would have been over a 1.5 second improvement over her big district time drop. Luke also swam the 200 free, and finished 11th with an equal to personal best time
Faith placed 11th in the 50 free with a 26.28, while David snuck into finals in the 50 free with a 22.50. Our 100 flyers had a good day, with Sarah dropping a 58.00 for a top seed, and Clayton finishing 10th with a 55.94, and Gavin placing 11th with a 58.83. Faith was less than a tenth from the finals in the 100 free with a 57.43, while Luke dropped nearly a second and snuck into 6th spot of finals with a 50.37.
Our girls 200 free relay of Abby, Chloe, Emma and Lillie dropped nearly 2 seconds for a 5th place seed in finals, and our boys relay of Clayton, Connor, David and Luke dropped 1.5 seconds from Districts and went into finals 2nd. Our backstrokers had great swims, and Sarah swam a 1:00.48 to get into finals while David was right on his best time with a 56.97 and also a finals seed.
Abby was 11th in State in the 100 breast with a 1:17.89, just before our 400 relays swam. Faith, Celilo, Lillie and Sarah combined together for a 4 second drop from their District swim a week ago for a spot to swim on Saturday in finals. And the boys swam a 5 second time drop to go into finals 4th in the last relay.
The meet for the Eagles started off with a bang on Saturday with David going from 6th to 3rd in the 50 free with a half a second drop and a 21.88 finals time. Our next podium swim was Sarah, swimming a 58.11 in the 100 fly for a strong 2nd place, over 2 seconds faster than third place and right on her personal best time that she swam Friday. Luke swam a solid100 free for the 6th place medal, just a tenth shy of his best time that he set on Friday in prelims.
The exciting relays continued with Hood River having a spot in the next four relay events. The 200 free relay found Abby, Chloe, Emma and Lillie moving up to 4th place. Then the boys dropped another second from their prelim swim the day before, and finished ahead of West Albany by 0.02 seconds (yes, that is 2 one-hundredths!) for a spot on the top of the podium – congratulations to our State Champions in the 200 free relay with a 1:29.61 – Clayton, Connor, Luke and David! What an exciting finish that was.
Sarah was in the next heat in the 100 backstroke, finishing with a personal best of 1:00.20 and standing 3rd on the podium. David dropped another second from prelims and ended up 2nd with a time of 55.90. And our 400 relay team of Faith, Celilo, Lillie and Sarah dropped another second from prelims and finished 4th – and added to the team score for a 6th place in State finish for our girls team. Our boys relay of Clayton, Connor, David and Luke had an exciting race and gave it their all for a four second drop from their prelims time – unfortunately they were called for a false start so they weren’t able to place. However, the effort and racing that they all did showed that when under pressure you can achieve great things – and all four boys did an awesome job representing the HRV at the State meet as they finished in 5th place in the team standings.
Congratulations to all the Eagles on a fantastic season.
